Dear Underclassmen,
It is no lie when they say high school is the fastest four years of your life. It feels like just yesterday I was walking into school as a freshman. I felt special finally being able to say I was a freshman instead of labeling myself with a number like 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. As I was a young high schooler, I always looked up to the seniors. They were adults, they acted mature and they looked ready to take on the world. I remember wishing for that, and as I continued to grow up, I continued wishing to be a senior and finish high school. Now as a senior, I wish I had not wasted that time away. Although high school has its highs and lows, so does every other area of life, and high school can be a bigger part of our life than we believe at the moment.
It was in the spring of 2020 that I was brought back to reality. Quarantine taught us how quickly something can be taken away, and it shows us how you cannot get time back. My mindset changed during that time, and I am grateful for the shift. Now as a 2021 senior, I know to appreciate the little moments. Even though football games looked different, I was still able to attend some games. Although the homecoming dance was canceled, I was still able to participate in spirit week. When there is a setback, there is always something positive to focus on. As a senior in a pandemic, this is the most important lesson I’ve learned.
Another lesson I learned as a high schooler is everyone is on their own path. There is no reason to compare yourself to others or doubt your actions. There are so many different paths to take, and everyone chooses a different path that is best for them. I compared myself to others, and it stressed me out. I felt like I should have been doing more, but looking back, I wish I had just enjoyed the experience instead of constantly doubting myself. After struggling with these confusing thoughts, I do not want anyone else to go through the same. I encourage everyone to believe in themself because a small ounce of confidence can help the overall senior year experience.
Take a deep breath, because you are on the right path. The most important thing is to believe in yourself and soak in the moments. Do not just move through the actions. Instead, be present in everything you do. High school helps you grow into the person you wish to be, and it can create memorable experiences. You’re only a high schooler once; even if you’re excited about the future, be excited for right now.
Sincerely,
A Senior
