Heels and Hairspray
Why we just can't get enough show choir

A volunteer opens the choir room door, a huge gust of hairspray flies at them. The volunteer looks in the room and sees pure chaos: Moms curling peoples’ hair, makeup, shoes, glitter, teenagers running around in high heels. Show choir has been going on for quite some time, and for most, it is the highlight of people’s year. It is a very competitive thing at Waukee, many auditions and some don’t make it in. The audition process starts late spring, and results are posted on the last day of school. Sophomore Avery Clayton said, “Show choir makes me happy because I get to do the things I love like singing and dancing, while with my close friends.”
There are many positive things about show choir. One of the things that many people like is learning cool dance moves. Show choir uses a multitude of different types of dancing from hip hop to jazz, or maybe in some cases an Irish jig. They use these dances to express the words they are perceiving through their songs. A lot of the dances help with what the group is trying to sing, and it can help elevate how people feel while watching their show.
Costumes are also a major factor in completing a show and making it feel professional. Lucky for students at Waukee, the costumes are pretty good and up to date, except for maybe Spark, the 7th-grade show choir. A lot of the time a show will have a quick change after a slow song otherwise known as a ballad, it is a lot of fun to do a quick change because it has a cool effect on the show.
One of the few issues with show choir is transportation to competitions. Will they go to competitions in a comfortable, spacious charter bus? Or a cold, bumpy, old school bus? Riding in a school bus can cause issues, especially if people are doing their makeup and hair in the back of a cramped bus at seven in the morning. Also, charter buses have better seats, which are more comfortable for those who need a little extra sleep before performing in front of judges.
The moral of the story is that even though it might have a few flaws, show choir is a very fun and uplifting experience to be a part of and has opened up people to something new. Junior Caitlin Como said, “I love being in show choir. My favorite part is when we get to go to competitions and perform.” It takes a lot of skill to master singing and dancing at the same time while also using expressions and telling a story, And it is worth trying.
