To most people, eSports sounds like a club for the stereotypical nerd, gaming, being smart, and no social interaction, but in actuality, eSports is a club where people who enjoy playing games hang out with each other, compete, and form new friendships with people of similar interests. Sophomore Oliver Tow describes it best as being, “a great place to be able to go and improve at games, while also being able to connect with a fun group of people.”
For the fall season, the eSports club focuses on the hit Nintendo game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch and hosts tournaments for both casual players on most Thursdays and more competitive players on Tuesdays. “I think it’s just fun to be able to host an event that everyone can enjoy,” says Junior club coordinator Jeremiah McNeese. He originally joined the club for his love of the competitive environment, as well as for meeting new friends.
Eventually, the eSports club will change what game they focus on with popular games like Mario Kart coming up over the next year. “There’s like a whole calendar of games that we’re going to end up playing,” says Clayton Weinberger, a sophomore. “One of the ones I’m looking forward to is Overwatch which will be in the winter season.” On most Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, the eSports club meets at Northwest High School from 4:00 to around 5:30-6:00 above the office.
