Breast cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in women. While this can affect anyone at any age, it mainly starts to affect women as they enter older age. One of the best defensive mechanisms is to find it before it spreads more around the body: getting regular screening tests is the most reliable way to find it early. These screens should continue as long as someone is in good health and expected to live at least 10 or more years. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in Iowa for women, at least 25% of women get diagnosed in Iowa every year.
Main symptoms of breast cancer

Some signs of breast cancer can be a lump under the underarms, thickening or swelling on the skin, and irritation near the underarm. Breast cancer is normally painless for most people, but it’s also very important to not ignore any signs that could lead to breast cancer, this pain can usually be described to be a burning and tense sensation.

Corbin Davis, a sophomore, when asked how could we raise awareness for breast cancer, he answered “I think some sort of fundraiser would be a great way to bring attention to this topic, we could include fun activities and promote this on social media and posters around the hallways.”, “With fun activities, I feel like it could bring a lot more attention to students in High School”. Corbin also said “bringing awareness to this can hopefully lead to a cure with all the input of the people who choose to be a part of groups that can bring awareness. With ideas from them hopefully, we can reach the right people and help find a cure or something that can be a better help for those who are suffering from breast cancer.” “Do you or anyone you know suffer from breast cancer”, Corbin answered with, “Unfortunately my grandma was someone who fought with breast cancer and sadly passed away due to it” when asked how could bringing awareness help eventually find a cure.
