Traveling to Iowa City to learn more about the journalism career path and have the opportunity to go live on a radio station is an unforgettable experience. This year our publications class had the opportunity to travel to Iowa City for the Iowa High School Press Association conference on October 20.
The conference was to educate or enhance the knowledge of young journalists that are looking into a journalism career path or just want to learn more about journalism. Many different sessions focused on different things such as broadcasting, and editing.
Junior Raahim Ali said, “My favorite session was the editor session because I learned about different ways to improve the school website. For example, the idea of a graveyard when brainstorming stood out to me; the graveyard idea implied not use of specific topics that are not relevant at a certain time.”
A highlight of our trip was going out for lunch. There were many different restaurants and it was great scenery. Sophomore Noa Nyguard said, “It was nice outside, it was also nice going around the campus and seeing the students. The hills were horrible, but the mini shops were really fun. I went to the bluebird diner, it looked very old like it’s been in Iowa City forever.
Another highlight of our trip was the bus ride. We played many games and had really interesting conversations with our classmates. Barbara Roberts said her favorite part of the trip was the bus ride. She expresses how she made a lot of memories on the bus “We played heads up and photo roulette. It was really funny when everyone was yelling on the bus because of the tension of the game,” she said.
This year was especially meaningful because our principal, Cary Justmann, was honored at Administrator of the Year at a lunch event for journalism advisers.
The day after the field trip our class shared what we learned and gained from the trip, also how educational and beneficial the trip was and how we can apply the tips and ideas we learned to next term and improve our web pages and articles.
