FFA
When: Mondays, 3:30 – 4:30
Where: Apex Building, Veterinary Sciences Room
FFA, standing for Future Farmers of America, is a nationwide organization, not only for those interested in agriculture but also for those pursuing business, science, and many other fields. “It’s like understanding everyone’s perspective about the agriculture field.” Junior Brooke Piekema, the president of FFA, said. “Agriculture is the foundation of our country, you might not think it is, but agriculture provides food and without that people would die. It also preserves the land we have, we don’t destroy it, we farm it and take care of it so we can grow food and take care of the environment. A lot of people think farmers don’t care about the environment, but they really do and that’s a big part of it.” FFA participates in activities with other FFA organizations from across the state, there is a wide variety of events that are held but some include barn tours and college visits. FFA can even provide you with scholarships and awards. The club needs more members. “We struggle with people understanding what FFA is, like they think ‘it’s Future Farmers of America, so it’s only for farmers,’ but it’s for everyone. There’s science, business, journalism, there are so many different parts.” This club provides great opportunities, a chance to make friends, and lots of fun along the way.
Art Club
When: Tuesdays, 3:15 – 4:15
Where: Mrs. Carlson’s Room – 205
Art Club and open studio lets everyone join the fun of art, whether in the class or not. Students can use any materials, participate in group activities, and do individual work. Some examples of group activities in the Art Club include wheel throwing, painting, and much more. “What I find the most fun about art club is getting to interact with friends, and getting to work on projects. Art club has helped me develop a new group of friends, and find new styles of art I enjoy doing.” Sophomore Emmy Green said. “Even if you’re someone who feels you don’t have a talent for art, you should give art club a chance. You might discover a new hobby simply for fun, or with so many mediums to create with, you might uncover a hidden talent you never knew you had. Plus, you’ll be hanging out with an awesome group of peers.” Art Club is a great choice for anyone wanting to try something new.
GSA
When: Wednesdays, 3:30 – 5:00
Where: Mr. Jorgensen’s Room – 741
GSA is a safe, student-led club free to anyone. Students discuss LGBTQ+ representation around the community and find other allies and LGBTQ+ members to befriend, but overall, GSA is about creating a comfortable place. “It is a safe space where I can be comfortable talking about anything and everything. I can be myself because I know the other people in GSA won’t judge me and they know they can be themselves and not be judged.” Max Ferguson, the leader of GSA, said. GSA also holds activities and discusses important topics in the community. “We are looking into meeting up with other Waukee GSAs. We want to make some kind of video that students can watch the videos would be about informing people about pronouns, harassment, things like that.” Max Ferguson added. If you are looking for a fun and safe space where you can make friends and learn more about your community, GSA is highly recommended.
