The Next Season of Cheerleading
The transition between fall cheer and winter cheer

The cheer season starts at the beginning of the year with football cheer. But even after the football season is over, cheer does not end. Cheerleading is an all-year sport, meaning the cheerleaders will cheer for basketball and wrestling during the winter. This winter season of cheer is different from most years in the past since this year more people tried out for the team. This means there are two varsity teams and two junior varsity teams because there are only six girls allowed on the court at once. After all, it is a small space.
Another difference about this season is that cheerleaders will be allowed to cheer at wrestling matches. Most first-time cheerleaders try out for winter cheer because the games are more fast-paced than football games. Again, since it is a smaller space and there are those limitations such as stunting.
Even though winter cheer is different from fall cheer, it is still a fun sport to experience. Freshman Lauren Harrison, who is a part of the JV football cheer team, also joined the basketball cheer. “I tried out because last season was fun, you make a lot of new friends, and it’s great to do something during the school year,” she said. Doing winter cheer is a great way to emerge yourself in an easy-going fun cheer environment if you want to learn more about it before going deep into cheer. Coach Timothy Gibson said, “Winter cheer is a great precursor to cheerleading. You get small amounts of tumbling, learn great cheer technique, and get to engage with a crowd.”
Overall, cheer is a great way to make friends, and participate in showing school spirit, you lead the school in cheering on their teams. Sophomore Lily Boyle said, “I love winter cheer because it is so fun cheering on your own school’s basketball and wrestling team.”
