At its core Publications is a student-led class that publishes student work out to the whole school. More specifically, we cover the yearbook, the Kee Scroll magazine, and the Arrowhead news website.
More than anything, in Publications we use our writing skills in pretty much everything. Hala White, the Scroll editor says, “All we do is write, make layouts, and have a lot of fun!”
The biggest project in Publications is the school’s yearbook, and we create it by conducting interviews, taking pictures of current events, and making sure everything gets covered over the year. “While we do the yearbook, we take photos, interview people, and overall just capture what happens in the school year into one book that you can look at for years to come,” Ritika Shroff, the editor of the yearbook, says.
In our different publications, we have all sorts of photos and graphics to provide a contrast from words, so we create graphics to include in our yearbook pages and articles. Raahim Ali, editor of the Arrowhead website, says, “Graphic design is really easy, you just need to get the hang of it.”
We also do a lot of photography, always making sure we have photos for sporting events and other extracurricular activities. Photography editor Alex Siegle says, “I get to help people break out of their shells and get up close and personal with the photography world.”
Earlier this year, the Pubs team got to go on a field trip to a national Publications conference in Iowa City for our hard work this year. Staff writer Logan Frink says, “The field trip was pretty fun, we went around the Iowa [City] campus, and we had three different periods and they each taught us certain things about journalism.”
To further celebrate our hard work, we often throw parties to take our minds off of writing and publishing. We bring food in potluck style, have fun activities that we do, and give out awards and recognition to people that deserve it.
During student registration, sign up for Publications and have a chance to work on everything listed above and more including more video broadcasts coming shortly.
