Waukee may have lost the basketball game against Northwest, but we did win the Toys for Tots competition for the second year in a row.
Toys for tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, which distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. More than 627 million toys have been donated from around the world to this organization. Anyone can donate to Toys for Tots; the toys can be anything from a lego set, to a homemade item.
Senior Brynn Herren, athletics department intern, organized the drive. “We participate in this to help less fortunate children throughout the community experience the joy of the holidays,” Herren said. “We want every kid to feel hope and love, you never know how one gift can impact someone’s life. Additionally, we want to unite all members of the community to help a great cause, creating a friendlier environment. Even with friendly competition between schools, people come together as one.”
This year the Warriors won against the Wolves in the competition, for the second year in a row. Together both schools donated over 600 toys, Waukee donated 400, and northwest donated around 200. Sophomore Grace Nichol said, “ I was sad that we lost the basketball game but it was really cool to win the toys for tots competitions for the second time, I hope we win again next year.” The winner was announced at halftime of the basketball game, by the Marine Corps holding a sign with either a wolf or the W for Waukee. The board was wrapped up like a present and after some anticipation, they unwrapped it to show the W. We are hoping to bring home another win next year.
