The College Football National Championship has taken place yearly in early January 2014. This year was the same with the game being played on January 9th in a matchup between the Georgia Bulldogs and the TCU Horned frogs. Out of the 125 division one team that compete each year, only one is crowned as champion.
The game started seeing TCU receiving the kickoff, leading to a three-and-out due to Georgia’s elite defense this would be a sign of things to come. Georgia would get the ball and instantly drive down the field eventually scoring off of a Stenson Bennett rushing touchdown. Bennett was a walk-on quarterback to Georgia in 2017 during his freshman season but transferred to Jones community college then transferred back to Georgia in 2018 but didn’t get recognition until the 2021 season when he helped lead the Bulldogs to a national championship win. eventually took over and put up good stats.
TCU’s second drive ended worse than the first with a fumble from Derious Davis near TCU’s own 35-yard line. Georgia would drive deeper into TCU territory but the TCU defense made the drive stall out which lead to an eventual Georgia field goal. With 6:51 left in the first quarter, the game started looking more and more in favor of Georgia. TCU got the ball back and after a deep shot from quarterback Max Duggan to Derious Davis the horned frogs got into Georgia’s red zone. They would eventually capitalize with a rushing touchdown from Max Duggan. Georgia was not phased at all by the TCU scoring drive and they went on one of their own. Bennett threw a wide-open deep ball to Ladd McConkey who ran it in for the score. After the made PAT the score was in favor of Georgia 17-7.
Georgia took another possession down into the TCU red zone when Bennett ran in his second rushing downtown of the night. This is the moment when fans opposing Georgia started to lose all hope in their team. “It was one-sided from the start,” said Sophomore Marc Benz and indeed it was. TCU fans might have gotten excited when Max Duggan took a deep shot down the field to eventual NFL draft pick wide receiver, Quinten Johnston, but the pass was intercepted and the sadness of TCU fans came back into full effect. Georgia once again went down the field effortlessly and scored a rushing touchdown from running back Kendall Milton. TCU whose been a second-half time all season was looking to go and at least try for a field goal attempt but this resulted in another interception of Max Duggan. Bennett took advantage of this moment and tossed up his second passing touchdown of the night. Going into half-time TCU fans and players alike had nothing to cheer about with a score of 38-7.
The third quarter started and Georgia took off right where they left it with Bennett tossing another touchdown this time to tight end and eventual draft pick Brock Bowers. TCU did nothing with their next drive and Georgia once again like they have all night went and scored another touchdown as Bennett lobbed a ball for McConkey and he caught it in the end zone. By the end of the third quarter, TCU was in a deficit of 52-7. There was no chance of coming back now and they just needed the game to end to help limit embarrassment. “I think there should be a mercy rule implemented to help prevent this” Gaby Okelloh was quoted as saying. Georgia did not show any mercy though they went down and scored another two touchdowns to end the game’s final score of 65-7.
The Georgia Bulldogs went through another season in the hardest conference in college football the SEC going undefeated and winning their second national championship in two years. Are the Georgia Bulldogs now the team to beat like Alamabama has been the last decade? Well just have to wait and see…
