The Waukee boys’ varsity basketball team had been preparing for the rematch against Northwest since their 2-point loss to the Northwest Wolves on December 6 last time they faced off. Coach Kanaskie said he was even more excited than for the first matchup. “I am more excited, I think we had a lot of chances to win the first game,” he said. “They’re a good team, but, we are excited to be able to play them at home, WE NEED TO WIN.”
Friday night’s game redeemed the Warriors, who soundly defeated the Wolves, 77-55.
The introduction of the Wolves left the Warrior fans uninterested; they had to pull out newspapers. A sellout crowd packed the fieldhouse, cheering for the Waukee girls’ and boys’ varsity appearances.
The first quarter was off to a good start for the Warriors because they had the lead of 17 to 12. In the second quarter, the Warriors were still in the lead with 32, and the Wolves with 22 going into halftime, where the little Warriors and Wolves performed for the crowd. By the third quarter, Waukee was determined to take this game home with the Warriors leading 52-39.
The fourth quarter was the Warriors’ fun time. Throwing down dunks and threes, the Warriors were still in the lead 64-45, and some of the players wanted to show out. Junior Manson Costello went in for the dunk, making the crowd go crazy, followed by senior Vance Peiffer’s dunk, but the one that drove the crowd wild was when senior Omaha Biliew threw down a wicked Eastbay dunk. The shocked faces in the crowd said it all.
After our loss against NW, the Warriors were excited to take home this victory. When I interviewed most of the people at the game many responded that we are taking the Big W (win).
Star senior Omaha Biliew, who has committed to Iowa State next year, led the team with 21 points. When I ask Ohama how he felt after this big game, he responded, “I feel sensational.”
