The 2022-2023 Super Bowl was one of the most entertaining and overall best Super Bowls of all time. The Kanas City Chiefs took on the Philadelphia Eagles in Glendale Arizona.
In the first quarter, the Philadelphia Eagles received the ball first and quarterback Jalen Hurts led the team down the field to the Kanas City one-yard line. Hurts took the snap and pushed through the pile for the easy touchdown, with the extra point being good the Eagles now had the early seven-point lead. “The game seemed already over when that happened because it looked like the Eagle’s offense was too dominant for the Chiefs’ defense” Marc Benz stated. The Chiefs did not seem phased though and MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes tossed an eighteen yeard touchdown to Travis Kelce, Butker’s extra point kick was good and now it was a tied game.
On the first play of the second quarter, the Eagles took a deep shot and it paid off. The ball glided through the air right into the hands of A.J Brown who was in the endzone by the time the ball got to him. The Chiefs got the ball back but had to punt away after they couldn’t convert on third down. This paid off for them though because on 3rd & 6 the Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts dropped the ball as he was trying to juke away from Nick Bolton who picked up the ball and ran it back for the thirty-six-yard scoop and score. Long-time Chiefs fan Gabriel believed the play was the game changer “That play was fun to watch as a Chiefs fan and not only that it was the momentum changer for the team. After that play, the team played with more intensity.” Once again the Chiefs had to punt the ball away and this time the Eagles capitalized on the opportunity. After a long drive down the field, Hurts ran in an eight-yard touchdown. Additionally, the Eagles kicked a field goal that was good and the halftime score was 24-14 in favor of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Following a halftime performance from Rihanna the third quarter was underway and the Chiefs scored a touchdown when Isiah Pacheco ran in a three-yard touchdown. The Chiefs would once again score a touchdown and for the first time in the entire game, the Chiefs had the lead of 28-27.
Starting the fourth quarter an uncharacteristic call was made by the Eagles when they punted the ball back to the explosive Kanas City offense. This punt lead to the biggest punt return in Super Bowl history when Kadarius Toney returned the ball sixty-five yards all the way down to the seven-yard line of the Eagles. On third and goal Patrick Mahomes tossed a touchdown to rookie receiver Skyy Moore. The Eagles went on a late drive with five minutes left and scored another touchdown on a Hurts QB power and following the successful two-point conversion the game was tied 35-35. On the final drive of the game, the Chiefs got bailed out by a pass interference call that set up the game-winner. Drew Klemesrud summed up the play pretty well “People would call the game rigged no matter what. If the same thing happened to the Eagles on offense fans would complain.” Harrison Butker kicked the game-winning twenty-seven-yard field goal.
The Kansas City Chiefs are now Super Bowl champions for the second time in four years and in the case of their quarterback Patrick Mahomes, he has already cemented himself as a Hall of Fame quarterback.
