It’s the end of winter sports and you know what that means, the track season is starting. The track is a sport that consists of running relays, sprint meddles, hurdles, long distances, and more events. I went around WHS and asked some of the senior track girls what they’re looking forward to this season, and this is what they said.
Most girls are excited about the long bus rides to the meets and the family-like environment that our team here has, but other members are looking forward to more specific things. One person, in particular, is senior Valerie Jepkosgei. She says, “I am looking forward to being in practice every day and long bus rides.”
Many people are also hoping to improve their skills and have a productive season. Senior Josie Moreland is hoping to make her last year here her best yet. She says, “I’m excited to hopefully take the high jump to Drake and [win] state again this year.”
Some of the girls are just wanting to enjoy their time until they head to college. That includes senior Lauren Bille who says, “I’m looking forward to meeting new people, and just having fun since it’s my last track season. Just want to make memories and not be too stressed out.”
I wanted to get a senior perspective on this season because most of these girls have been running track with Waukee since eighth grade and they deserve a shoutout. We can learn from them about how to thrive as a team.
The track is not an easy sport to do, and these girls will be working hard for the next few months to accomplish their goals. We’re looking forward to seeing how this year’s track season is going to go!
