Last weekend Spirit and Millennium attended Urbandale’s Show Choir Invitational. Spirit placed second in the mixed prep division, and Millennium made it to finals and got 2nd runner-up. It was a great day and everyone in the show choir agreed that it was Spirit and Millennium’s best performance.
When the Waukee show choir is not performing at competitions we are free to eat, watch other show choir groups and hang out with friends; However, when either Spirit or Millennium is getting ready to perform the other show choir is on standby to help with risers and set up the stage. The other show choir gets to watch them warm up in our homeroom space!
When the other show choir walks to the warm-up room, it has become a tradition this year to line the hallways and hype each other up. We cheer and say good luck as they pass by. At the competition in Urbandale last weekend I made a tik tok as they passed by me to a popular show choir sound. The sound was from the TV series Glee and contained the classic Glee acapella transitions with Rachel Berry saying “This..is show choir” at the end.
I love making show choir TikToks and have made many others at other competitions, so I saved it to my drafts and posted it later thinking nothing of it. But, overnight, the TikTok blew up and over the next few days it went viral.
Currently, Tik Tok has 213.7 thousand views and 32.4 thousand likes. Many other show choirs from around the Midwest have commented talking about how much they love the dresses, how much they loved Millennium’s show, and many other nice things, as well as some funny comments. Among other show choir performers, the official verified Microsoft EDU page with 1.4 Million followers commented, “We are in the presence of royalty”.
The TikTok shows Millennium performers, junior Abby Banwart, junior Kiya Barlow, senior Mallory Kron, senior Gabe Carter, senior Tatum Lowell, senior Sam Nigg, junior Quinn Monson, junior Sydney Berger, senior Eleanor Peiper, senior Luke Brandt, junior Noah Kohtz and junior Coria Chaloupecky. These were just the people who happened to pass by me as I was filming.
Senior Tatum Lowell recounted watching me film the video. “It’s funny because I remember seeing her videotaping and I didn’t think it was going on social media so it was interesting to see. I was on the wrong side so people commented on that”. When walking to the warm-up room show choir performers walk down the hall linking arms with someone, and in TikTok, the guys were on the right side and the girls were on the left, but Tatum and Sam were flipped and many people mentioned that in the comments section. Junior Quinn Monson expresses seeing himself on the “For You Page” of TikTok. “The Tik Tok popped up on my For You Page and then I saw me! I was like ‘who’s that handsome guy’”. Senior Gabe Carter also shares the same excitement. “I was shocked to see myself on my For You Page with that many likes when the TikTok went viral!”
This TikTok was just a silly little thing to show how much I love Millennium but it turned into a big deal! I am so grateful that it went viral and that the comments section showed so much love for Millenium and the show choir in general. I’m glad this Tik Tok gave us a platform to show Millennium off to the world. So thank you Millenium for helping me make a viral Tik Tok!
