Players Experience
WHS Girls Tennis was added in 2010 and has grown so much over the years. The team members have put a lot of time and effort into this sport and love seeing the hard work pay off during tournaments. Sophomore Gloria Ashitey joined tennis a year ago and has progressed so much, “I wanted to start playing tennis because it just always seemed like a fun sport and caught my attention.” Gloria’s favorite thing about being on the team is being able to be surrounded by her friends and being able to learn and get better at certain things. When asked what keeps her motivated she responded, “When I get a skill down and get to try it during a match.”
Teams Progress
With the team growing so much in the last few years, girls’ tennis has definitely shined the brightest this year. The main challenges of this sport are knocking down those mental barriers and pushing yourself through the good and bad that come with playing this sport. So far every season these girls have qualified for the State Tournament and have placed as high as fourth every time. As the tennis program continues to grow, the team as a whole is building a strong path of success that encourages them to compete to the fullest.
Biggest Challenges
The team has also gotten to the tennis regional finals and has won three conference titles. They also have one of the highest participation percentages of any WHS sport, as they have over 45 girls playing every year. “The sport isn’t as easy as people may think, one of my biggest challenges is losing a match after putting so much work into it.” Sophomore Gloria Ashitey states. Both WHS girls and boys’ tennis have become two of the largest in the state and are lucky enough to be able to play on the best courts west of the Waukee stadium. The team has invested in year-round conditioning and individually improving their skills.
