Learn how WHS teachers celebrate Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is the one day that the moms in our life get recognized. The mothers in our lives are greatly underappreciated and underrecognized. No matter if you have a relationship with your mom or not, there are mothers surrounding you from your friends and even your teachers. We have some teachers who are not just teachers, they go home and care for their children and the rest of their families with little to no recognition.
Mother’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate the mother figures in our lives, from just a thank you to an extravagant meal. Our Librarian, Mrs. O’Conner says “My husband and kids usually make a nice breakfast on Mother’s Day. My kids also make [my] cards. I like how Mother’s Day is celebrated. I appreciate having a day to celebrate mothers and all they do for their families/children.”
Our home lives can really connect to school way more than we think, especially to teachers. Becoming a mother can shape how teachers teach within the school setting. Mrs. O’Conner says “Becoming a mother helped me learn to keep things in perspective. It reminded me that everyone has things going on outside of school, and it’s important to be understanding and encouraging for my students.” Even just as the librarian her perspective on kids in high school changed when she became a mother. Biology teacher Mrs. Nichols says “I think being a mother has made me more patient with kids at school. I feel better equipped to deal with teenage issues since I have parented teenagers and survived. I just think I have a decent grasp on what kids are going through during high school since I’ve lived it with my own kids.” Like Mrs. O’Conner, she explains how much more understanding she has for high school students after raising some of her own.
These teachers also have some great advice on what you can do for your mom on Mother’s Day. Nurse Maggie says, “It’s not about how much you spend on a gift, just know what your mom enjoys… just the little things can mean the most.” Knowing your mom and doing little things that they enjoy like taking the dog for a walk, or even making her a cup of coffee shows how much you care. It is also very important to celebrate your mom every day of the year, not just one day in May. Mrs. O’Conner says “Give her the day off on Mother’s Day, but also don’t take advantage of her kindness every other day. When your mom wants to spoil you or spend time with you, though, let her!”.
Mother’s Day this year is May 14th so mark your calendars and plan something for you and your mother figure to do and really celebrate and appreciate everything they have done for you. From providing you with everything you need to deal with the drama and attitude of becoming a teenager and growing up. Your mom is one of the most important people in your life, don’t underestimate that.
