WHS seniors share their thoughts on what senior year is like in 2024

From what once was a class of young teens who had no idea what to do in life, to young adults experiencing their very last year of high school. This year seniors graduate in May of 2024, and many feel excited but some also feel confused. After being at Waukee High School for 3 years, we as seniors have gained many memories and skills that we will forever keep with us. As we move forward in the year I have noticed that many seniors feel differently about graduating. According to Gracey Williams, she feels super excited about being a senior but she is looking back at her years here at Waukee. She says that the one thing she genuinely regrets is not turning her homework in on time. Many students here at Waukee feel like the time here flew by fast and have many regrets but at the same time, they wouldn’t change it for the world.
Although some students feel excited for their future, many also fear what life has to offer. Kadee Deemer, a senior at Waukee High School, says that she is scared for the future and isn’t sure what the next step is. Although many students know what they want to be when they get out of high school, some don’t know where to start and that is completely normal. It is okay to feel scared, confused, excited, and or nervous. Entering the world outside of high school can be scary but using our experience at Waukee and the knowledge we gained being at Waukee we will get through it.
Being a senior and having to leave is hard, but it can also be difficult for others as well. I asked Mr. Justmann how he felt about this year’s seniors leaving, and he said It’s always hard when a group of students that you’ve known for 3 years leaves; however, He is equally excited for them to take the next step in their lives. Hate to see them leave, but proud of them! At the beginning of the sophomore year, Mr. Justmann had an assembly, one specifically for sophomores. He mentioned how the next 3 years would fly by, at the time we thought he was crazy, but now we look back and think he was right. Kadee Deemer says “It is crazy to think he was right. When I was a sophomore I thought he was crazy but when we had our senior assembly it really hit me. I’m really a senior.”
After being at Waukee High School for three years, many have learned things they wish they would have known back when they first started. I asked 3 seniors if they had any advice they would give to the following classes that might benefit them. Gracey Williams’ advice was to, “Make sure to do your homework, it will help you in the long run!” Kadee Deemer says to stay motivated! The next 3 or 2 years will go by extremely fast! And lastly, by Jake Pallister, “don’t waste your sophomore year and take classes you think will be interesting.”
As you can see, many seniors feel differently about graduating but in the end we are all in this together. We will all walk the stage and go through life as a warrior.
