What Art at WHS has to offer

When entering high school, it is much different from Timberline. You have many more classes to choose from which includes more options art-wise with over 20 different courses that are art-related. Art is a very diverse class, it isn’t just simply drawing with a pencil. Art courses here in Waukee High include classes that have clay, jewelry making, online designing, charcoal, painting, photography, and much more. Are you interested? Do you want to know if you should take an art course?
After going around asking people their opinions on whether students should take an art class. A Sophomore, Miku Mizushima, says “I think students should definitely take this class as long as they are willing to enjoy it. In art there usually isn’t a right or wrong so as long as you give your best you’ll receive a decent grade. It is also very fun so I recommend it.” She also adds, “Compared to some other classes, art is more easy-going and chill. It’s mostly just work time and you get a lot of freedom. I like how it’s self-paced.” Another sophomore, Niamat Kudlagi, mentions, “I do think art is a fun/easier class. It’s really fun just having time where you can relax and just draw/paint/sculpt/etc. For some people, this may be a “challenging” class especially if you are a perfectionist or need to be “good” at art but it’s not a big deal if you are not “good” at art! I think many people just have an image of what “good” art looks like, but “good” art looks in many ways!”
I asked an Art teacher here in Waukee High, Ms. Carroll, and she shared her opinion by saying, “ If you take an art class, you will be able to understand the why behind how art is integrated into our everyday lives, local and global. In a WHS art class, you will experience new materials, and new techniques and find joy in creating artwork that you will be proud of, regardless of your previous art experiences.” She also thinks taking an art class would give students advantages, “Art is creative problem solving and often intersects many other areas of study. I believe it helps you use critical thinking skills and the ability to look at the bigger picture of all areas of study.” After reviewing Ms. Carroll’s response she explains how being an art teacher is difficult. “Anything is hard if you don’t have a plan in place and a positive mindset. Supplies are something you really need to think about way ahead of the project you plan to teach. Most art teachers order from two or more vendors. Organization is key!”
After reading these interviews, considering taking an art class here would be a good idea. You save money by using school art supplies instead of spending your money on it. Supplies in general are a hard thing to get, simply using them in school art classes saves a bunch of time and money. If you start realizing you want to take an art class later in college the class would be pricey. Art could also be a relaxed break class since it doesn’t require any art knowledge, if you try it’s good enough to get you a good grade.
