Winter breaks for high schoolers are like a relaxing sweet pause from school. It’s all about late mornings, cozy days spent indoors, hot chocolate, and hanging out with loved ones. This gives our students a break from working hard and gives them time to spend and cherish moments with friends and family. Waukee High School’s winter break is from December 22nd to January 2nd. Many students at Waukee love and look forward to this winter break. For instinct, Eva O’Neill, A junior at WHS states “I’m very excited for this winter break to finally come so I can sleep in and spend more time with my family”.
Students love winter break for many different reasons. To begin, it’s a break from schoolwork, giving our students a chance to relax and enjoy their time. It’s also a time to hang out with friends and family and to enjoy fun Hobbies. There’s also the excitement of the holiday season with the cozy winter, family time, festive decorations, the joy of gift-giving, and delicious holiday treats. Noelle Determan, A junior states “I like winter break because it’s the longest break of the school year, and it just gives me more time to do fun things and relax without having to worry about school.” A sophomore, Ava Reyes agrees and adds “I love it because I get to sleep in and have a bunch of free time. It’s very relaxing.” Everyone loves a good break every once in a while.
Winter holidays are a collection of celebrations that occur during the winter season. This can be religious, for example, Christmas, Hanukkah, or New Year’s Day and winter solstices. Some students might not celebrate these specific holidays due to their religious beliefs, or they might just prefer not to, which is perfectly fine and normal. Everyone has their traditions and ways to enjoy the season. For example, A junior Ella Makohoniuk shares “I’m Christian, so I celebrate Christmas every year on December 25th. My family and I have many traditions for this season. Those include decorating our house with Christmas decorations, making traditional Ukrainian foods to eat on Christmas day, and more.” On the other hand, Another junior Qamar Hatem expresses “I don’t religiously celebrate Christmas but my family and I still participate in some of the Christmas traditions, such as opening presents.” Both these different traditions from students help show the diversity in Waukee. At the end of the day, It’s all about spreading joy, spending time with loved ones, and enjoying the winter season.
