Almost twenty years after the original movie, Mean Girls takes the big screen for the second time, on January 12th. The script for the movie was written by Tina Fey, who also played Ms. Norbury in the original and the remake. The movie stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels, Bebe Wood as Gretchen Winners, and Avantika as Karen Shetty.
Mean Girls has been an iconic film since it came out in 2004. The movie has been a hit in popular culture because of all the catchy lines, hilarious characters, and plot. The movie became a Broadway musical in 2017, giving a new look into the film. The new Mean Girls is also going to be a musical with a very similar soundtrack to the Broadway musical. The original Mean Girls went off to make 130.1 million dollars at the box office and many of the actresses in the film were nominated and won many awards.
The plot of Mean Girls is honestly quite simple. Homeschooled Cady Heron moves from Africa to Illinois and she is first introduced into public school. Cady then finds herself mixed in with a group of popular girls who call themselves the “plastics”, a group that the whole school is obsessed with. The trio consists of Gretchen Wieners, Karen Shetty, and the leader, Regina George. Cady soon gets pulled into their scheming ways and learns the true nature of these girls, and the rest of the school.
With a remake of an iconic movie, there are many feelings about it. Sophomore Victoria Gansvind states “I’m very excited for the remake to come out and watch it with my friends, the twist sounds so interesting and more impactful.” Junior Nia Hirschy comments “I am super excited for this movie to come out because I loved the first movie and I’m excited to see how they remade it. I loved the original Mean Girls movie. I feel like it’s kind of like high school in a way so it’s super relatable and overall a fun movie. I also can relate to many characters in a way which makes the movie more interesting from my point of view.” When asked about her favorite character, Sophomore Reese Hilton says “My favorite character is Damian.” The remake is sure to have everyone talking.
