Track & Field Triumphs

The Waukee Men’s Track and Field team has gotten off to a roaring start, picking up right where they left off last season. With the indoor season ending on March 19th at the Indoor Wartburg Invitational, the Warriors took gold in all relays they participated in, as well as the gold in multiple individual events. Waukee also had a lot of success at the two previous indoor meets at Northern Iowa and the IATC Indoor Championships. Twenty-one (individual events, and relays) from the three indoor meets have been added to the top ten record list at Waukee High School, seven of which are new school records, an incredible feat to begin the season.
Senior Uriah Allen is new to WHS this year, but breaking records isn’t anything new to him. Allen broke two school indoor records in the 60m dash and the 200m dash. Uriah explained what it was like adjusting to his new school, “I’ve had a lot of ups and downs but I really have gotten through it and have made a lot of new friends.” Allen also expressed his feelings towards the program as a whole, “The track program has been great, the practices have been something else but other than that it’s been a great experience!”
Unlike Allen, Junior Jonas VanDis has been at Waukee his whole life. Jonas also helped to break multiple indoor school records (one individual event, one relay) including the 800m run, as well as the 1600m Medley. VanDis is coming into this season with many accomplishments already under his belt. Last year Jonas helped qualify his 4×800 to the Drake Relays and was a State Medalist. He also broke the mile record for his grade last season. Jonas explained the pressure he feels coming into this season, “I definitely feel a little bit of pressure because of the high expectations I have for myself but I don’t get too anxious unless it’s a big meet,” He said.
With all of the records broken and all of the success that was had during the Indoor Season this year, the Outdoor Season is looking very promising. This year’s roster is full of talent, and fans can’t wait to see what the Warriors can do next.
