The environmental club is an economically friendly organization that helps strive to protect the environment and bring awareness to our community. This club meets at 7:40 am every Friday morning in Mr. Yeoman’s room!
Recently, the environmental club set up a meeting activity where students could come together and see what the organization was all about. In the process, the students were able to paint pots, put soil, and plant flower seeds into their pots.
Senior, Kaylee Clevenger, said, “It was a very fun opportunity and it was nice to know sophomore and junior students care about the environment!” Many students joined in on the pot painting activity and were able to get to know each other and relax before the start of the school day.
There are many activities that are planned similar to plant potting. Scattered throughout the year, the environmental club plans days to do trash pick-ups at Centennial Park, right across from the Waukee High School. On these days, students are able to come together with friends and family and pick up trash in the community while also earning silver cord hours!
While trash pick-ups might not be what you want to do, senior, Lily Voynov, mentions how the environmental club “taught hibernation to elementary-aged children at the West Des Moines Library and it was a great experience.” Students a part of the organization are also capable of helping the environment indoors, by helping younger adolescents learn about the environment they live in and animals.
Moreover, another member, junior, Jack Lau, mentions how the environmental club also, “decorated the recycling bins in the front of the high school to encourage more people to recycle. The club is trying to reduce the amount of cans in landfills and be able to repurpose them for other uses.”
As the environmental club is predominantly maintained by seniors, as they graduate they are looking forward to seeing more members join the club and continue on this fun organization!
Senior, Ally Klinefeldt, says, “I think it’s a fun club that has people who are passionate about making our school a better place as they try and find new ways to help the community’s environment!”
All members of the Environmental Club welcome all high school students with open arms who want to get involved with their community!
