Waukee High School has a stellar reputation for its theatre and speech programs. With talented actors, passionate speechmakers, and dedicated crew members, these programs consistently deliver unforgettable performances that leave a lasting impact on audience members. Waukee Theatre Arts and the IHSSA are the perfect way for students to develop their talents, connect with like-minded peers, and unleash their creative potential.
The fall play and spring musical are mainstays at Waukee, and this year’s productions are sure to be better than ever. Be sure to see The Great All-American Musical Disaster in early October and Pippin in April. When asked about what she is excited about within theatre this year, Noa Nyguard, a senior and the publicity head of Waukee Thespian Troupe #1451 said “I love the process of putting on a show, so I am loving being in the play right now and I am so excited for Pippin.”
As auditions for the speech team approach, occurring on the last day of finals week, it is important to understand what to expect from the upcoming season. Staff at the Arrowhead spoke to multiple students about their excitement for what is to come during speech this year. Ciarra Matlock, a sophomore, said “I’m excited to be able to hang out with friends and compete during the speech season.” Anna Williams, a junior, used the same question to put a spotlight on her favorite categories, answering “Definitely individual speech.”
However, individual speech is not the only way students can get involved! With competitions ranging from district to all-state, as well as dozens of unique categories, there are plenty of opportunities for students interested in a variety of different performance areas. In essence, theatre and speech act as fun after-school activities for many students. It is also a way to express creativity, grow confidence, and collaborate with people from all grade levels.
