With the second and final day of the state golf tournament concluding last Thursday, there is a lot to unpack. The team finished 6th overall in the state, with senior Ian Lantz coming in 8th overall individually. At districts, they shot their team lows, shooting a 292, Freshman Johnny Ward shot a season-best with a 64, this fantastic performance at the district meet got them second place and clinched a spot in the playoffs. And finally, at the conference championship, they came home with the W over big teams like Johnston, Dowling Catholic, Waukee Northwest, and WDM Valley, proving “that we could be competitive toward the end of the season,” Ian Lantz said after the win.
For some of the team, this was their last year for high school golf, players like Joel Peterson (3) and Ian Lantz (5), ended their final season on a high note. Though they are leaving, they still feel confident with the future of the team, Joel said, “I absolutely feel that the team is in good hands, the underclassmen have grown and will continue to grow as they take up new roles on the team.” Ian agreed, saying “the team is in great hands, under the guidance of both of our coaches and the fact that they will be getting back 2 team leaders from the past season, I believe that this entire roster has potential to be great and compete for years to come.”
For the rest of the team, there are high hopes, “I’m looking forward to seeing how our team keeps on growing after a tremendous season,” Johnny said in an interview. With a young team and strong leadership from coaches and team leaders, the future’s looking promising for the entire Waukee golf program.
