Whether it’s the latest young adult fiction, a complex classic novel, or a thought-provoking memoir, the high school library has a book for everyone. However, the newly created book club allows for even more literary opportunities. The book club is perfect for students to expand their horizons, connect with fellow bookworms, and cultivate a love of reading within the Waukee community.
But when exactly does the book club happen? According to Mrs. O’Connor, the high school librarian, “Meetings are Monday mornings at 7:40 in the library. Students are welcome to just show up!” As the advisor to the book club, Mrs. O’Connor makes sure that students are informed about their responsibilities as club members, which include, “Being ready to discuss what you’re reading or have read. Some students in the book club have decided to read the same book together.”
Although Mrs. O’Connor knows a lot about the book club, she is not the one who originally started the club. That honor goes to juniors Aisha Newland and Noelia Neal, the founding members and current co-presidents. When asked why they began the club, Aisha said, “Noelia and I originally started the book club because we love reading and wanted to share our love for reading with others.” Noelia brought up the importance of having a book club, stating, “People need to learn how to enjoy reading and I think a book club would encourage people to come in and maybe pick up a good book.”
Joining the book club is a great way to explore literature, connect with new people, and have fun while being immersed in new worlds. The book club can be for everyone, from lifelong bookworms to students just looking for something to do before school starts. Either way, the book club is a warm and welcoming group that offers enrichment for all kinds of readers, so that every student can dive into a new book.
