This year, Waukee High School has introduced a new resource for the graduating class of 2025: the senior workshop. The workshop is designed to assist students in preparing for their futures after high school by offering guidance on various topics. Counselors are available to help seniors with the next steps in their academic and career journeys.
The first workshop, held on October 10th focused on college applications using the Common App, as well as apprenticeship opportunities. Workshops take place weekly on Thursdays during the first and fourth blocks, in the library and 700 hallway. Seniors are required to attend at least one session, but it is highly recommended that they attend multiple workshops to receive further direction for life after high school.
Many students have already benefited from these workshops. Setting aside time to focus on your future is crucial for an easier transition from high school to the real world. Senior Marvella Akol said, “The Senior workshop has been a calm environment to be productive, with plenty of guidance.” It’s easy to procrastinate when unsure where to start, so attending a workshop can provide a helpful first step. Senior Keyasia Moore stated, “It’s nice to have time dedicated to thinking about my future. I have a lot of questions, and the workshop is a great space to get answers.”
Deciding what comes next after high school can be stressful, but with the support of Waukee staff, students can ease their worries. Whether you have questions about college, careers, or other post-graduation plans, the workshops are a great place to find answers. Senior Malaya Fuller said, “The workshop is a great space to receive a solid foundation for your future.” In addition to the guidance counselors, the College and Career counselors, as well as the Career Service Coordinator, are available to assist students with their plans.
This week’s workshop, scheduled on Thursday, November 7th, will focus on scholarships.
It’s important to remember that attending the workshop is not an excuse to skip class or socialize. Students must have permission or a Minga pass. The workshops last the entire block, so you can drop in after receiving work time in class. Take advantage of this valuable resource to ensure you have a solid plan after high school!
