Winter is here, and if you’re looking for fun things to do in Des Moines, you’re in luck! There’s so much happening around town that’s perfect for hanging out with your family or friends. Whether you’re into holiday lights, skating, or checking out cool shows, Des Moines has something for everyone.
Ice skating is another awesome winter activity, and there are lots of rinks around town. The Brenton Skating Plaza in Des Moines is super popular, and you can skate outside with great views of the city. If you’re looking for something indoors, try the RecPlex in West Des Moines or Metro Ice in Urbandale. Don’t worry if you don’t have skates—you can rent a pair there. Just make sure to check their websites for times, and some places even require reservations. Selin Tekinalp, a sophomore, said that ice skating is one of her favorite winter activities to do with friends. It’s super fun, and it’s the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit!
Some of the most popular activities this season include Jolly Holiday Lights, Jingle in the Junction, and The Nutcracker. Jolly Holiday Lights supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and it’s such a fun drive-through event with tons of amazing light displays. If you’re up for a classic Christmas vibe, head over to Hoyt Sherman Place to catch The Nutcracker. The dancing, the music, and the costumes make it magical! Last week, the Des Moines Festival of Trees lit up the Iowa Events Center, and it was amazing! The festival, which supports Blank Children’s Hospital, featured beautifully decorated trees, holiday crafts, and tons of family-friendly activities. Lauren Wilson, a sophomore, said that The Festival of Trees is so cool because it’s festive, and it’s awesome knowing it helps kids in need. It also really gets you in the holiday spirit!
Des Moines Performing Arts also has some amazing productions lined up. This year, they are showing Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End, A Christmas Carol, Pop ‘n Jolly and the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert. If music is more your style, check out Noche where Max Wellman and the Des Moines Big Band are hosting “Home for the Holidays” and Frank Sinatra nights. It is perfect if you are into jazzy holiday vibes! Rayne Munoz, a sophomore, said she loves the musical and jazz aspects of the holiday opportunities because they allow for the spread of the true meaning of Christmas, and it’s just a small thing that brings back joy in a stressful time for many.
Winter can get stressful with school and finals, so take a break and enjoy all the fun stuff Des Moines has to offer. Whether you’re skating with friends, seeing a show, or just admiring the lights, there’s no better way to get into the holiday mood. Have fun and make the most of the season!
