Why January Through Spring Break isn’t All Bad

The period between January and spring break is often considered the worst time of the year. With no more joy from the holidays, we’re left with gloomy days, unbearable colds, and a dullness that seems to last forever. Both the intense grind of school during these times and the lack of almost any exciting milestones make these few months last what seems to be forever. For students, this time of year is particularly stressful, mainly due to finals being just around the corner and extracurriculars ramping up. “It’s probably my least favorite time of the year,” said junior Amiah Johnson. “Winter break just got done, meaning it’s prime dance season and finals are coming up, so everything is just stressful.”
On the other hand, this time of year isn’t all bad. As sophomore Brecken Beer put it, “It’s always cold and there’s reallynothing to look forward to except basketball. But then once you get towards spring break, it gets pretty good.” There are also some notable events to look forward to. Basketball season is in full swing, and the show choir season is starting to kick off. Waukee’s annual show choir invitational, Star Struck, is taking place from the 16th through the 18th, giving students something to hold onto up until spring break.
Despite its challenges, this season doesn’t have to be entirely bad. Embracing winter activities, prioritizing wellness, prioritizing wellness, and focusing on personal goals like sticking to your New Year’s resolutions or staying consistent at the gym, are ways to help break the dullness and lift spirits. While it may seem like the longest stretch of the year, the promise of spring break is just around the corner, bringing brighter days and a well-earned change of scenery.
