A Winter Break Into Books
A look into books WHS english teachers loved as a kid

As winter break comes into view and the winter sky, and streets are filled with families on their way to visit their relatives. When phone towers are too far away for any digital connection, there are always books to connect to. So, here are some memories of the Waukee’s English literature staff’s relationship with books – when they were young.
Librarian Mrs. O’Connor recalled loving books since she was a young child”.” She explained how her parents read to her frequently when she explained.“middle school is when I really started reading for fun a lot,” she said. Similarly, English 2 and Creative Writing teacher Mrs. Armour got a love of reading from her parents, mainly in second grade when she read her first Harry Potter book. “I was just pulled in immediately,” she said.
Librarian Mrs. O’Connor recalled a time when young adult books were not around, causing her to read her mother’s books “When I was younger I read a lot of adult books like I read ‘Flowers in the Attic” and some other kind of creepy, scary things.” She said,
English 2 and Creative Writing teacher Mrs. Armour recalls reading has helped her read from books better than learning it in a lesson. “I think it just helps calm me down sometimes. I’ve noticed that when I’m teaching and not reading, I get more anxious and stressed more easily than if I have a book I’m reading throughout the week.” She said,
English teacher Mrs. Chia believes that classic literature is a type of book teenagers should read. “Where the Red Fern grows, Bridge to Terabithia, Are You There God It’s me Margaret, and Hatchet”, are books Mrs. Chia encourages students to read” As the years pass people’s love for books diminishes, but that does not mean that if you get books in your stocking or under the tree you should take some time to read because if this article has taught you anything books can benefit you in the long run or ride,” explained Mrs. Chia All of these books suggested are wonderful read, and I hope you found one that appeals to you.”
